Smell of the selfbraided rope?

Hello, last Sunday (16.4.), my children and I braided small ropes in the Vasa Museum. The material smells very strong. Where does this smell come from and is it safe for children?
Tanks!

  • Hello Jana

The rope smells of tar. Tar is a sort of resin, extracted from wood. It is used for protecting rope fibers, and ships timber, from rot.

(Tar has also a tradition as an ingredient in schampoos and soaps, especially in the Nordic countries)
