Stairs
hello I am an Italian modeler and I'm building the Vasa model (de Agostini) but looking at the photos I don't understand if there was stairs to go up from second to the third quarter deck as described in the model instructions. Seeing the photos it seems there are only single steps. It is right ? I hope to be able to come and visit your beautiful museum soon. Thank you very much for your help.
Best regards

There is a ladder on either side of ship to go from the main deck to the first quarterdeck, and a second pair of ladders from there up to the main part of the quarterdeck (these only have three steps). To get to the highest level, there is a bench seat either side of the central door you can see in the image, with a pair of small steps above each bench.
I hope you will be able to come see the ship in person soon!
Thank you very much for your help and kindness
Could I ask you if these bench seats , the steps and the wall of the third quarterdeck , probably, were painted in red ?
Thank you again

That is a good question, but I am afraid that the best answer I can give is "maybe". The surfaces were not well preserved enough to allow us to recover any paint remains, which is true for most of the surfaces around the decks. The steps up to the uppermost level are solid carvings, and we think that the bulkhead on which they were mounted was painted red, so it is likely the steps were painted, and possibly the bench, probably in a contrasting colour. The railings along the sides were painted yellow, so that is one possibility for the seats, but it is hard to say what colour the steps were.
