What does it cost to maintain the Vasa?

I am comparing the Vasa to the Titanic in an essay and if it would be worth it tho raise the Titanic. I would expect the maintenance cost to be about double on the Titanic, because the ship is about 3 times as big, but not made of wood. I remember in the movie theater they said that it was very expensive, but I don't recall the exact amount.

  • Dear Carl,

    Thank you for your question.
We apologize for the late reply, it has been difficult to find the right person to answer your question.

The head of Collections Unit at the Vasa Museum, Jacob Jacobson, answered:
The cost to maintain the Vasa as she lays now, is very complicated to calculate. There is the rent of the museum which include the climate system, the staff that works in the museum, the research that is being done and the actual day to day maintenance. Compared to the cost of the salvation and conservation of the Vasa, this is relative small amounts. We do not know exactly. There are so many factors to consider and they are intertwined with the cost of the running of the museum.
Even though these are not numbers and calculations, I hope it gives you some insight in where the costs lie.

    Best regards
  • Thank you very much. I will be sure to use it 😀
