what "medium" was used to mix pigments, how did paint stick to ship. beeswax&resin involved?

I am doing some research on how the ship was painted, what was the pigment mixed with.

Dear Randal Arvilla, the pigments were mixed with linseed oil (also called flaxseed oil or flax oil). There was no beewax or resin involved. The wood might have been prepared with linseed oil first, or painted directly with the paint.
